(Hetero)sexist microaggressions in practice

Verbal microaggressions perpetuate inequalities and negatively impact wellbeing. Yet, there is little work on in situ. We address this gap, connecting research with scholarship concerning prejudice discrimination situated interaction, focusing (hetero)sexist microaggressions. Conversation analysis (CA) membership categorisation (MCA) are applied to excerpts of naturally-occurring focus group conversation determine what look like practice; how they affect conversations; whether map onto well-documented CA/MCA phenomena. Findings suggest that when people produce microaggressive utterances, use various devices (e.g. pre-sequences, idioms, humour) mitigate accountability. Furthermore, recipients’ reactions, the treatment an utterance as can involve hallmarks dispreferred turns including hesitation and/or indirect challenges involving deletion/repair initiation. therefore propose such features criteria for utterance/sequence be considered microaggressive.
